The New Year is slowly nearing, and with the holiday season already upon us many people are indulging in retrospection and reevaluating some of their life choices. New Year’s resolutions are the perfect opportunity for all those who have failed to start making the changes that they said they would make next week, next month, or perhaps when winter starts.

Well, now’s your chance to sit down and prepare a list of important lifestyle changes you want to make, and being the charitable and caring bunch that we are here at Lifehack, we’ve decided to give you a bit of help – because since the majority of people fail to stick to their resolution, you’ll need all the help you can get.

What follows is a list of 50 common New Year’s resolutions with a piece of advice and plenty of links to useful articles that deal with the issue in greater detail. Get in shape: Losing weight is the top resolution for Americans, and combined with “exercise more” and “stay fit and healthy” it is something that over a third of the population wishes to achieve. It’s easy enough to start an exercise and diet program, but the trick is to find a decent one that will give you steady results and will be easy to stick to in the long run.   • 10. Reduce stress: They say that stress is one of the biggest killers out there, and it can have a very destructive effect on your relationships as well as your health.   • 11. Learn to be happier with your life: Even those that are in decent shape, make a good living and have stress under control can still be unhappy. It takes time and patience to learn how to find joy in the little things and not to let problems bring you down.

  • 14. Watch less TV: The average person wastes a lot of time in front of the TV, time that could have been better spent developing skills, learning or keeping your body active. Once you manage to cut down on TV time, you will realize just how long and productivea day can really be.
  • 15. Read more: Books are an excellent way to gain a lot of knowledge on a huge variety of topics, and are also a great exercise for your brain. It’s not that difficult to go through 20 or more booksin a year – you only need to make it a habit, discover your type of books and find a bit oftime for reading here and there.
  • 16. Find a significant other: We all need someone to hold at night, talk to and share our deepest secrets with, but finding the right person is a matter of trial and error. We need to go out and get to know a bunch of potential partners before we can find the one that we can get along with really well. Learn how to dress with style: The way you dress can say a lot about you, and wearing the right clothes can make you seem powerful and confident, which in turn can help you land a job, get promoted, and catch the eye of a lovely guy or girl.   • 20. Spend more time with the people that matter: There is just too little time in this life for us to waste it on insincere, duplicitous and toxic people. We should focus on the people who we care aboutdeeply and who care about us, as this is the best way to stay happy.

Start drinking in moderation or quit drinking altogether: While it is completely safe and healthy to drink one or two servings of an alcoholic beverage of your choice per day, not a lot of people can say that they can follow this rule effectively.   • 22. Get out of debt: You can’t really move forward in life if you are weighed down by debt. Spend less time on social media: Some people might not spend hours in front of the TV, or playing video games, but social media has become a serious addictionamong a wide range of demographics. It’s fine to stay in touch with friends and family, but if you consistently spend more than an hour every day on social media, it’s time to make a change.

    • 42. Learn how to defend yourself: Being able to ensure your own safety, and the safety of those you love, is a very important skillset to have. It’s not all about groin kicks and palm strikes, however. You need to learnhow to conduct yourself and what kind of behavior to look out for in others.
    • 43. Become more romantic: Romance is often the first casualty in longer, more serious relationships, but it doesn’t have to wither away. A few romantic gestures here and therecan keep the passion going for decades. It will be fun, even if you’re not the romantic type.
    • 44. Start remembering important dates: Speaking about romance and keeping a serious relationship fun, you don’t want to keep forgettingbirthdays, anniversaries and other important dates. There are plenty of memory tricks that take very little time to master, so you’ll never forget another date again.
    • 45. Become more social: Being a man, or woman, about town has its perks. You get to have fun, meet new people and find out interesting things, but you can also develop leadership skills and learn to work in a team.     • 46. Start being more creative: There are times when we get mentally fatigued and our creativity just goes out the window. This is particularly bad if your job or hobby depends on you coming up with fresh ideas and thinking outside the box.     • 47. Start expressing yourself artistically: While some of us are more logical, with a scientific mind, most people still have a bit of a creative spark in them. So go in the arts, write, craft, make DIYprojects – whatever makes your soul free.

    • 50. Stick to the good healthy habits you’ve developed: The last, and most important point to mention is that all the positive changes you make have to be permanent. You head into the New Year with lofty intentions: You’re going to hit the gym every day before work, find the woman of your dreams, and finally become the boss. But these are the kinds of resolutions that fizzle well before spring rolls around.
When you pick a resolution that’s too big and broad, it’s hard to clearly define what you want to accomplish, which can make it that much harder to reach your goal, says Keri Gans, R.D., author of The Small Change Diet. We’ve rounded up 10 common New Year’s resolutions that are setting you up for failure—and the ones to focus on instead that you can see through to the end.

THE COMMON RESOLUTION: “I’m going to take control of my health.”
THE SMARTER RESOLUTION: “I’m going to make an appointment with my doctor.”
Why it works: Getting your health in fighting shape requires different things for different people: One guy may need to ramp up his physical activity, while quitting smoking might be the smartest step for another guy.
But you need a pro to guide you in the right direction, and nearly 1 in 4 guys haven’t seen a physician in over a year, a report from the National Center for Health Statistics found. Visiting your doctor helps you catch conditions like prediabetes or high blood pressureearly on, which can prevent them from turning into bigger issues like diabetes or heart disease. And that’s how you really take control of your health.
An annual checkup is just one hour of time out of your entire year, says Jamin Brahmbhatt, M.D., a men’s health activist and urology surgeon at the PUR Clinic in Orlando. So call your doctor and schedule an appointment.
And no, your busy schedule is no excuse to put it off: Many doctors now offer extended hours in the evenings or on weekends. THE COMMON RESOLUTION: “I’m going to eat healthier.”
THE SMARTER RESOLUTION: “I’m going to have at least two pieces of fruit a day and eat a salad before every dinner.”
Why it works: Picking one or two things to focus on is much more realistic than changing your entire diet—and telling yourself whenyou’re going to incorporate these changes during your day makes it more attainable, says Gans. Plus, focusing on what you should be eating helps you avoid a restrictive “I can’t eat that” mindset, which often just leads to a junk food binge, she says.
Fruit’s a good choice, since most guys don’t eat enough of it. Plus, having something naturally sweet as a dessert will help eliminate your not-so-healthy sugar cravings over time, says Gans. Your diet’s probably lacking vegetables, too, so start every single dinner with a salad. Just hold the creamy dressing, or ask for it on the side, to avoid turning it into a calorie bomb. Vegetables and mixed greens are packed with filling fiber, says Gans, which prevents you from loading up on extra calories during your main meal—ultimately leading to better portion control.

THE COMMON RESOLUTION: “I’m going to work out every day.”
THE SMARTER RESOLUTION: “I’m going to exercise 2 to 3 days a week.”
Why it works: Going from zero to 100 just isn’t realistic, says obesity specialist Spencer Nadolsky, D.O. If fitness isn’t a part of your daily routine, and then you make a pact to hit the gym daily, you’re going to burn yourself out and quit after a month.
The smarter approach? Start hitting the gym a few days a week that actually work with your schedule—say, squeezing in a quick run during lunch, or maybe you hit the gym while your kids are at basketball practice. It’ll make you more likely to commit and stick with your new routine, Dr. Nadolsky says. Once you know you can commit to twice a week, you can gradually bump your days up. THE COMMON RESOLUTION: “I’m going to lose 20 pounds.”
THE SMARTER RESOLUTION: “I’m going to focus on what I can control, like changing my diet and exercise routine, rather than the number on the scale.”
Why it works: You can’t necessarily control the result, but you can control the behaviors that bring you closer to your weight loss goal, says Dr. Nadolsky. Focus on what you need to do to make it happen. That might mean committing to the gym two or three days a week, and fitting in vegetables and lean protein at every meal, he says.
Having a plan lets you keep closer track of your progress, too. When you hit a weight loss plateau, you can go back and assess the behaviors you’re supposed to be doing. If you realize you’re slacking on them, that’ll explain why you’re struggling to lose weight—what you need to work on to get there, says Dr. Nadolsky. Start with these 7 tiny changes you can make that will help you lose 10 pounds.



THE COMMON RESOLUTION: “I’m going to build muscle.”
THE SMARTER RESOLUTION: “I’m going to eat more protein and strength train 3 times a week.”
Why it works: Hitting the gym regularly isn’t going to make you stronger if all you’re doing is sticking to your cardio routine, says Dr. Nadolsky. You need to pump iron: Exercise creates microtears in your muscles—and the harder your work out, the more tears there will be. When those tears are repaired, your muscles grow bigger and stronger.
But lifting weights alone won’t help you hit your strength goal—you need to make sure you’re eating enough when you’re trying to gain muscle, says Dr. Nadolsky. Focusing on increasing your lean proteinintake is a good start.
That’s because protein aids in repairing these tiny tears in your muscles, which helps them recover—and grow bigger—faster. Shoot for 25 to 35 grams of protein four or more times a day, suggests Men’s Health nutrition advisor Alan Aragon, M.S. Aim to eat one of these meals within one to two hours pre- and post- workout if you want to bulk up. THE COMMON RESOLUTION: “I’m going to save money.”
THE SMARTER RESOLUTION: “I will create and maintain a budget.”
Why it works: Creating and sticking to a budget gives you the tools to help you save more, says Ted Braun, a certified financial planner at Hoover Financial Advisors in Pennsylvania.
“If you make $50K a year, roughly $42k after taxes, and if your total fixed expenses are $2,500 month, you should have $12k in the bank at the end of the year—and if you don’t, you need to evaluate your discretionary spending,” Braun says.
There is no right or wrong way to create a budget, Braun says, but you want to make it as simple as possible so you stick with it. Google around or use a budget worksheet (like this one) or just create your own Excel spreadsheet.
Start with your monthly net income, then subtract your fixed expenses, like car payments. Lastly, subtract your discretionary expenses. Try to use the same credit card all month for all your personal spending, which will make it super easy to track, suggests Braun. At the end of the two months of tracking your purchases, reevaluate your budget to see if you can make any positive changes to your spending habits, like reallocating extra personal spending into an extra $50 savings or cutting back on restaurant meals.



THE COMMON RESOLUTION: “I will be less stressed by my job this year.”
THE SMARTER RESOLUTION: “I will decrease my workload in the office.”
Why it works: Parts of your job will probably always cause you some kind ofstress, but eliminating unnecessary stressors of it can play a big role in calming you down, says Jeffrey Nevid, Ph.D., professor of psychology at St. John’s University in New York.
The best way to do this? Meet with your boss to see what can be taken off your plate and delegated to someone else, suggests Nevid. If you’re genuinely overloaded, make a case to your boss that it’s in the company’s best long-term interests to reassess your workload, suggests Alison Green, the career expert behind the blog Ask a Manager.
“In those cases, you can point out what’s not getting done for lack of time, or what’s getting done, but with less care and attention that would be ideal,” she says. Then, you can move on to possibly moving stuff off of your plate entirely. (Here are 6 more ways to beat job stress.)
Just make sure you’re truly swamped and stressed before you do this, Green advises. “If you aren’t really all that overloaded, going to your boss and asking to do less will come across as tone-deaf at best and slacker-ish at worst,” she says. “So you really need to have a good sense of how reasonable your workload is overall.”

Every New Year's Eve, I like to take a few moments to pause and reflect on the past year. 2017 has been a challenging year for our world as the Trump Administration has pushed us to a dangerous precipice. I remain deeply disturbed by the actions of President Trump, and appalled by his domestic and international policy-making. However, I am inspired by the millions throughout the U.S. and around the world who took part in the Women's March last January to voice their opposition to the president and stand up for human rights. I am also encouraged by the activists who have pushed back against both Transphobia and Islamophobia as well as the many in the LGBTQ2+ community who have continued the fight for complete equality around the world.
We have seen positive changes in BC and in Canada with governments working to address historical wrongs and take accountability for past actions. However, we still have a lot of work to do, especially for Indigenous communities as we collectively embark on the road to reconciliation. In 2018, it is also essential to pressure the Trump Administration to take real action on Climate Change before it is too late. We must continue to build grassroots progressive movements in Canada, the U.S., and around the world to move us forward, and prevent hatred and bigotry from further creeping into our society.
Personally, 2017 has been a year of immense growth. It is a year that started with living in Vancouver, before moving back to Victoria, the place I have come to see as home. I am lucky to have my amazing boyfriend, Jackson Barnard, by my side; he has taught me so much about love and what life has to offer. I am also tremendously grateful for my friends, family, and colleagues who have been so supportive of my goals and have encouraged me to dream big. While I am ending the year on a bit of a down note with a broken kneecap, I am happy with the many positives this year has brought me.
I'm excited for 2018 and all that it has to offer. I wish you a Happy New Year and hope you're spending the day with those you love most!
