Collision coverage
Cover repair and replacement costs, even if you’re at fault.
Even the best drivers can make mistakes, and fixing your vehicle can be expensive. Collision coverage helps pay for your vehicle repairs, towing, storage and more, even if the crash was your fault.
How does Collision coverage help you?
Collision coverage covers your repair costs when you hit another vehicle, object or the surface of the road.
Note: Some customers with a history of at-fault crashes can only buy Collision insurance with a high deductible, or may not qualify for this coverage.
Dave ran into another car at an intersection. The crash was his fault, but he had Collision coverage. That means the costs for his car’s repairs (minus the deductible) are covered. If he didn’t have collision coverage, he’d have to pay those repair costs—which could be thousands of dollars—himself.

Comprehensive coverage
Non-collision damage can happen in a variety of ways.
Break-ins, a chipped windshield, falling trees—a lot more can happen to a vehicle than just a crash. Comprehensive coverage helps offset the costs from this kind of damage.
How does Comprehensive coverage help you?
Comprehensive covers loss or damage to your vehicle from:
  • Theft and vandalism
  • Fire, earthquake, explosion
  • Falling or flying objects such as a rock or gravel hitting your windshield
  • Hitting a domestic or wild animal
  • Weather—lightning, windstorm, hail, rising water

Windshield repairs now covered under Comprehensive
Windshield repairs can now be done for free under your Comprehensive coverage, without paying a deductible. The windshield damage must meet certain criteria, such as the size and location of the chip, and must be completed at one of ICBC's Glass Express facilities. Find out more about windshield repairs.

Comprehensive claims will not affect your current safe-driving discount level

Why get it? Here are some examples
  • Somebody broke into Mandy’s car, stole her prized stereo system and damaged the door locks. She had Comprehensive coverage, and it looked after replacing the stereo and repairing the other damage the thief caused.

  • Don was driving home one evening when a deer ran into the road. He wasn’t able to stop before he hit it. Very scary, plus there was quite a bit of damage to his car. He was relieved to find that the repairs were covered by his Comprehensive insurance.
  • Jim’s windshield was chipped by a flying rock while he was driving. He didn't want the chip to grow and make his windshield unsafe. He was happy to learn that chip repair was covered by his ICBC Comprehensive coverage. And, he didn't have to pay a deductible.

Specified Perils
Like comprehensive coverage but at a lower price. With Specified Perils you only pay for the coverage you need.
Protect your vehicle against risks from weather, theft, fire and more. Specified Perils coverage is similar to Comprehensive coverage, but has a shorter list of damages it covers. It also costs less than Comprehensive.
How does Specified Perils coverage help you?
Specified Perils protects you from loss or damage to your vehicle from:
  • Theft
  • Fire, earthquake or explosion
  • Weather—lightning, windstorm, hail, rising water

Specified Perils doesn't cover things like vandalism, windshield damage or hitting an animal.

Why get it? Here are some examples
  • Dave’s car was stolen. He was shocked, because it was old and nothing fancy. He’d chosen to buy Specified Perils coverage anyway, and now he was glad he did. It covered a rental vehicle so he could still drive to work and take his kids to their activities. And when his car was found over a week later with lots of damage, his coverage looked after the repairs.
  • Renee got caught in a severe hailstorm. She couldn’t believe how much damage it did to her car. Luckily her Specified Perils coverage looked after getting her car repaired and repainted.

New Vehicle Protection
You love your new car, but can you afford to replace it because of a crash?
After a home, your new car is usually the second-largest purchase you'll make. You can protect your investment with coverage that will repair or replace it in the event of a crash.
New Vehicle Replacement Plus (NVR+)
New Vehicle Replacement Plus is all about giving you choice and peace of mind, even if you were at fault for the crash.
After a crash
If your vehicle can be repaired, we'll fix it with unlimited new parts from the original manufacturer, if available.
If your vehicle is written-off...
  • You'll have the choice of:
    • replacing it with a new model,
    • replacing it with a different vehicle of equal value, or
    • taking a cash payout.
  • We'll protect you from depreciation and inflation, so your settlement will cover the full cost of a new vehicle.
  • We'll also reimburse your deductible.

When does a vehicle get written-off?
Normally a vehicle is written-off when it would cost more to repair than what the vehicle is worth.
NVR+ protection lowers the threshold. With this coverage, your vehicle is written-off when the cost to repair exceeds just half of its market value.

Eligibility
Most drivers who have a 20 per cent or better claim-rated scale discount are eligible for NVR+ protection.
You can get NVR+ protection for any car or truck that weighs less than 5,500kg when fully loaded, as long as the model is from within the last two years.
To confirm your eligibility and get a quote for NVR+ protection or one of our related coverages, talk to your broker.
Not eligible?
If you're not eligible for NVR+ coverage, your broker can get you set up with an alternative form of coverage. Your broker may recommend Replacement Cost coverage, or Limited Depreciation Endorsement, which offer similar benefits

Limited Depreciation Endorsement
Limited Depreciation Endorsement coverage is open to many people who may not be eligible for NVR+.
If your vehicle is written off, it provides you with either:
  • a new vehicle of the same model year (if available), or
  • a payout of the original purchase price (or manufacturer's suggested retail price at the time of purchase - whichever is less).

If your vehicle can be fixed, repairs will use new parts of similar kind and quality.
Talk to your Autoplan broker about the different coverages and which one is the best option for you.
Why get it? Here are some examples
  • Nate was thrilled with his new car, and he made sure he hadNew Vehicle Replacement Plus coverage — just in case something happened to it. Sure enough, it was in a bad crash less than a year after he bought it. The repair costs would have been just over 50% of what Nate had paid for the new car. But because he purchased NVR+ coverage, his car was written off and he got the full replacement value.
  • When Julie bought her new car, she chose Replacement Cost coverage for extra protection. Her car was in a crash, and she was happy to find out her coverage meant the car's repairs were done with brand-new parts from the original manufacturer.

Buy or renew your insurance
ICBC's Autoplan insurance is sold exclusively through our province-wide network of 900 Autoplan brokers. These brokers are licensed professionals who can help you choose the right insurance protection for you, your family and your vehicle.
Auto insurance isn't always easy to understand. Your broker is there to help you compare and customize Autoplan coverage to fit your individual needs—the products you choose, the length of your policy, your payment options and more.
Choosing a policy length
Autoplan policies can last from one day to one year, so you have lots of options to meet your needs.
One-year Autoplan policyThis is the option most customers choose, and many use our monthly payment plan to spread the cost over a year.
Short-term Autoplan policy
- 3 to 11 months

When your vehicle won't be on the road for a full year, a short-term policy might be your best choice. You'll pay a small surcharge, but the total cost will be less than a full-year policy.
Temporary Operation Permit
- 1 to 15 days
This is a good option if you only need a few days of coverage. If you're going to need several TOPs, you may save yourself money by buying a three-month policy. Talk to your broker about the best options for you.
Renewing early
You can renew your insurance early, up to 55 days before your Autoplan policy expires.
Keep your insurance up to date
Be sure the information on your Autoplan policy is correct and current. If it isn't, you may not be covered if you have a claim.
Talk to your local broker if you're:
  • Moving (even within the same community) or temporarily relocating
  • Changing the way you use your vehicle (for example, you start driving to work or school)
  • Driving a different vehicle
  • Modifying your vehicle (for example, changing its colour, chassis, fuel type)
Other factors can also affect your insurance, so please ask your broker if you have any other changes.
Tickets, fines and penalties
Please note that before you renew, you'll need to pay any outstanding amount that you owe to ICBC or the provincial government, including traffic tickets, penalty point premiums and any Autoplan debt.
Contact us if you have questions about your debts or payments.

What affects your Autoplan premiums?
Like any insurer, we try to match insurance costs to a driver's and a vehicle's risk—that is, the likelihood of a claim in the future.
The main factors we look at
How you use your vehicle
Your premiums reflect the amount of time you spend on the road and the different conditions you drive in. More about rate classes.
Where you live or use your vehicle
We divide the province into territories based on geography, because traffic and other driving risks vary around the province.
Your insurance and claims history
A crash-free record gives you discounts on your Autoplan premium. If you've had at-fault crashes, you could be paying more. Check how your insurance and claims history can change your premium.
If you choose to buy Optional coverages, there are a few more factors
The type of protection you choose
Optional products—like Collision, Comprehensive or extended third-party liabilityto protect you, your family and your vehicle—will add to what you pay.

Your deductible
Your deductible is the amount you pay in a claim before we cover the rest. The lower the deductible, the more your coverage will cost.
The vehicle you drive
The age, make, model and features of the vehicle you drive, along with its repair costs, affect your premiums.
We take your vehicle and group it with similar vehicles based on factors like body style, horsepower, costs of repairs and vehicle price. Each group of similar vehicles is assigned a vehicle identification code (VIC) to help calculate the price of your insurance like cars, minivans, SUVs and light trucks.

Talk to your Autoplan broker if you have questions about how your insurance is calculated and how you can save money.

Claims and your insurance costs
A big factor in your Autoplan insurance premium is your claim record. The good news is that the longer you go without an at-fault crash, the lower your premium will be.
Changes to Basic insurance premiums
To get the car insurance system back on track and better for B.C., we’re making changes to it.
One of the biggest ways we can improve B.C.’s car insurance is to change the way premiums are set, including how your claim history impacts your premiums. Find out more about the changes.

How at-fault crashes affect your premium
Under the current system, all new B.C. drivers start out on our claim-rated scale (CRS) at what's called a base rate (CRS level 0).
Your insurance discount gets better every year you don't have an at-fault crash (a crash that you’re found responsible for). See our claim-rated scale chart for details.
Under the new system starting September 1, 2019, at-fault crashes will have more of an impact on your insurance premium than they do today.
In general, the more you crash, the more you will pay in insurance. However, the Basic insurance discount you receive for years of driving experience will be extended and we will recognize up to 40 years of experience (today, customers stop receiving discounts after nine years). That means you’ll see safe driving discounts for much longer than you do today.
Repaying a claim to protect your premium
Under the new system, we’re also changing the rules around repaying a claim.
Currently, if you’re at-fault in a minor crash, it may make financial sense to repay the claim in order to preserve your insurance discount. However, this allows some drivers to mask the true risk they represent.
So, starting September 1, 2019, only claims less than $2,000 can be repaid.*
* We are proposing that customers have until August 31, 2020, to decide whether to repay a previous claim (claims between March 1, 2017 and August 31, 2019), even if it has already affected their premium and regardless of the cost of the claim. This helps ensure you have enough information and time to make an informed decision about whether to repay a claim or not and how it will affect your insurance costs.

Discounts and savings
You can lower your insurance costs by qualifying for our discounts and savings. Your years of driving, the number of vehicles you insure, how you protect your vehicle—these factors and more can pay off with savings on your Autoplan premium.

Changes to Basic insurance premiums
To get the car insurance system back on track and better for B.C., we’re making changes to it.

One of the biggest ways we can improve B.C.’s car insurance is to change the way premiums are set. Find out more about the changes.
Low-kilometre discount (new)
Starting September 2019, we will offer a new 10 per cent discount for vehicles that are driven less than 5,000 km in a year.

Who would benefit?
The discount may benefit those who do not regularly use their vehicle, for example, those who only drive on evenings and weekends, use public transportation to commute to school or work during the week, or simply have a second vehicle that’s not used very often.

The discount applies to Basic, Extended Third Party Liability and Collision premiums.

Eligibility
The discount is based on the mileage driven over the last 12 months. This is determined by an odometer reading from the previous policy term, and another at the policy’s renewal a year later.

Collecting odometer readings
We are now collecting odometer information to be able to offer this new discount, which would take effect starting September 2019. If you have a vehicle that may qualify for this new discount, you need to provide your vehicle’s odometer reading at your next annual renewal or new policy purchase.

Only annual policies are eligible for the discount (not short-term policies).

There are certain rate classes that will not be eligible, such as motorcycles and collector vehicles because their rate classes already reflect low kilometres travelled as most of these vehicles are not used year round. This discount is meant for those who are in rate classes where the majority of the vehicles are driven longer distances.

Talk to your broker if you have questions about your vehicle’s eligibility.

How the discount works
The qualifying period for the discount starts when you provide your Autoplan broker with the first vehicle odometer reading.

In a year’s time, at your annual renewal, the odometer reading will need to be provided again to determine if the vehicle was driven less than 5,000 km during the year. If eligible, the discount will then be applied at that time to your renewed policy. If the vehicle was driven 5,000 km or more, it will not be eligible for the discount.

Providing an odometer reading to your broker
To provide the odometer reading, you will need to show your broker one of the following:

a photo of the vehicle odometer taken within the last seven days
a receipt or work order with an odometer reading dated within the last seven days from either a garage, a mechanic, an auto shop or auto dealership
a reading through a service or app which reports vehicle information and diagnostics, generated within the last seven days.
Changes to your policy or transfers mid-term
Unfortunately, we cannot add or change odometer readings mid-way through your policy term. Interested customers can only provide their odometer reading at the time of their annual insurance renewal.

The low-kilometre discount cannot be transferred to another vehicle mid-term.

Experienced-driver savings
Experience pays off. If everyone in your household who drives your vehicle has 10 or more years driving experience, you could be eligible for savings.

The vehicle needs to be at base rate or lower on the claim-rated scale (in other words, you aren't paying a surcharge). And if your driver's licence has been suspended, prohibited, expired or cancelled for any continuous period of a year or more, that time wouldn't count towards your driving experience.

Seniors' savings
You may qualify for a 25 per cent saving on Basic Autoplan if both the vehicle owner and principal operator are 65 or over, and don't use the vehicle for commuting, business or delivery.

Anti-theft device discount
Passive electronic immobilizers
Electronic immobilizers disable your car's engine when the ignition is turned off. An engine with an immobilizer won't start until it recognizes a special key (with computer chip) or electronic device (usually on key ring). Electronic immobilizers offer the highest level of protection.

The way an electronic engine immobilizer is activated determines whether or not the device is a passive electronic immobilizer.

A passive immobilizer: no interaction required except removing the key from the ignition
Manual immobilizer: requires the user to press a button to activate
If your vehicle is equipped with a passive electronic immobilizer, you could save on your Comprehensive or Specified Perils coverage. Contact your Autoplan Broker to learn more.

Note: motorcycles and trailers aren't eligible for the anti-theft device discount.

Anti-theft deductible savings
Using an anti-theft device for your vehicle could also get you a $100 deductible rebate when:

Your properly installed and activated anti-theft device prevented your vehicle from being stolen and there's evidence of intent to steal the vehicle.
You may also get a $100 deductible rebate if your vehicle is stolen and recovered, with evidence your anti-theft device was compromised.
Unfortunately, motorcycles and trailers aren't eligible for the anti-theft device discount.

Fleet discount
Insure five or more eligible vehicles for business or commercial uses and you could save up to 63 per cent on your Autoplan premium.

Disability discount
If you've been approved for a fuel tax refund under the B.C. government Fuel Tax Refund Program for Persons with Disabilities, you may also qualify for a 25 per cent discount on your Basic Autoplan—even if you don't drive the vehicle you're insuring.

Eligible drivers must bring appropriate documentation to their Autoplan broker's office to have the discount added to their policy. More information on the Fuel Tax Refund Program can be found on this Ministry of Finance tax bulletin.

New to B.C.?
Your good driving record could pay off with savings on your Autoplan insurance.
